Rana has zero grasp of statistics

She managed to glean from a quick glance at a webpage that Steve has 50% chance of inheriting the gene. Michelle asked what that would mean for the baby and was there anything that could be done, and Rana pretty much said No.

What she should have said is "Well, the baby then has 50% chance of inheriting the gene, giving an overall chance of your baby having it of 25%". That would've been more reassuring surely.

I'd never want Rana advising me on my health, what a pessimist!

I am ANYTHING but a pugnacious upstart

I remember 19 years ago when me and my wife were told there was an "increased risk" of our baby being born handicapped, which caused us a lot of upset. When we found out that an "increased risk", in this case, meant roughly a 1 in 300 chance, I asked my wife to think how likely she would be to pull one specific card from 6 full decks.

When I pointed out that was the odds we were dealing with, it certainly felt a lot better than what the professionals had told us.

How did Steve and Michelle know who she was. I barely knew who she was.
