Season 6-8: The grouchy and humorless Andy (I hate the color episodes BTW)
Me too. It's like a different show. The color ones have a totally different feel.
Different writers likely contributed to that, as well as the noticeable absence of Don Knotts.
While going color likely improved the production quality of the show, color alone can't make-up for weak scripts and average performances.
Look at how MY THREE SONS fared when it went to color in the 1965-66 season: While it was still a great show, many fans believe the earlier seasons, 1960-65, the B&W ones and ones with Tim Considine and William Frawley, were funnier, more comedic.
In the color years, the stories were similar, but more "family-oriented" and there was a little less humor that one saw earlier. The departing cast members were good but weren't the central focus of the show, kind of like the characters on Law & Order.
While Don Knotts' character wasn't in every single B&W episode, his character was critical to the show and along with Andy & Opie, one of the key characters, if not the main character.

I actually like the color episodes of both series (although I could do without Warren).
In TAGS, I really like the Howard Sprague episodes, for example. But I agree about the three phases of Andy. He did always seem angry in the later seasons.
With My Three Sons, I grew up watching the color seasons because they were the ones in syndication in the 70s, while the old B&W ones were not. Also, I prefer Robbie and Chip when they're older, and I really like the story arcs with Katie and Polly.

Andy Griffith changed from a good old country boy in the first 5 seasons to a stick in the mud from then on out. I mean being with Miss Crump would do that to any man, I would imagine.... Losing Barney, even with the ratings still high, was a killer for me. Along with many others
