I bought the Percy Faith 45 single around the fall of 1977 after hearing it a few times. Thought it was catchy (what a peculiar 19-year-old I must have been), bought it and have probably listened to it well over 100 times over the decades.
Never thought to watch the movie until about 4 or 5 nights ago (what a lagging 54-year-old I am!!) and finally got through it at 3:30 this morning. It took me long enough, but now I have finally enjoyed the entire experience of "A Summer Place".
It's a beautiful score, and I especially like the way the theme is used and re-used throughout, without being heard to excess and used subtly rather than jarringly to accompany the tender dialog.
I wish I had watched the movie back around the time I bought the record when I could have appreciated it more, but I have an idea that even then it would have seemed dated. The 60's rendered ground-breaking material such as this archaic, or at least scenarios such as these had become more commonplace during the decade to come and therefore less "shocking" as society began to shed its inhibitions.
