I believe all of this movie was filmed in the Carmel/Monterey area. I know the Frank Lloyd Wright house well, but where is (was) the Pine Island Inn? There is (was?) a Pine Inn in downtown Carmel, but it doesn't look anything like the one in the movie. The Pine Island Inn looks like some of the houses in Pacific Grove, although the scenery around it looks more like 17 Mile Drive. Did anyone notice that the roof in the attic scene looks like the roof in the gazebo where Molly and Johnny meet for their Big Encounter? Nancy
It was known as the LaPorte House and was located right across the street from Lighthouse Elementary School. The house is not right next to the water as it appears in the film. I went to Lighthouse from 4th through 6th grade and would gaze at the home while on crossing guard duty. Later I worked at the LaPorte Auction House in Monterey and belonged to some of the same youth social organizations as the descendants of the family, which got me an invitation to a wedding reception held in that amazing home. I had seen "A Summer Place" many times by then, so I spent most of the reception exploring the house and grounds. I wish I had taken my camera! What a missed opportunity.
Another location that still was standing when I was there two years ago (but is no longer used) was the old Monterey train station, not far from Old Fisherman's Wharf.
The Frank Lloyd Wright house in Carmel is still standing in all it's glory as well.
After all these years, I think the plot still holds up. My mother told me how shocking it was for it's time. Even this many years later, the plot still moves me.
I'm confused. Did they shoot exterior shots then super-impose onto a background that looks like a big expanse of grass and trees? The house I'm thinking of in Pacific Grove is right across from the ocean and surrounded by many homes on all sides.
The house The house that was the Pine Island Inn. is in Pacific Grove, it was really rundown several years ago, it is in better shape now. Would love to see the inside !
Well...I certainly appreciate all of the information as to 'Location.' I always thought "A Summer Place" was actually filmed on an island off the Maine coast. Someone once told me that it was filmed on Monhegan Island, but that's simply not true. The 'street' rumors about movie-making are endless...and, yes, quite often...nothing more than a pack of lies.
I just watched this movie yesterday and was thinking the same thing. I am familiar with both coasts (Maine and northern California, especially the Monterey/Carmel area)and they are both so different. This movie had a definite California look to it.
