A Summer Place - '59
Movie girl: I saw this film in the 1970's on TV when I was still a teen. It is very well done and timely I feel. All the actors and actresses are very good in their roles - especially Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue as the tempted younger lovers.
Also, the undercurrent of John's mother and Molly's father who re-kindled their romance many years later - and soon were divorced. It is hard for Molly and John to accept their parents' behavior at first.
One criticism is the cut scene from the movie where John's boat capsizes and he and
Molly are out all night. Molly's extremely fanatical mother assumes that her 17
year old daughter had sex with the 19 year old John. I recall Molly's hysteria and
terror when her mother calls a doctor to the island to examine her. Though the
doctor proclaims Molly is still a virgin, her emotional pain at her mother's failure to
believe her on such an important issue and extreme physical discomfort with the
exam destroys her feelings toward her mother. Mrs. Jorgenson's extreme insensitivity toward her daughter's feelings is beyond belief!
HAS ANYONE ELSE viewed the film with the missing sequence? I have an old video tape of the film with commercials that I made from one of the TV stations and really thought it would be complete. This I taped in 1983 or '84 I have seen it a couple of times over the last 20 years and suddenly recalled the missing scenes in the film. It is very cleverly cut, but it does appear that John and Molly had a whirlwind romance. What we don't get to see today is an important issue in the film - Molly and John's extreme fear of MRS. J.'s displeasure and the resultant doctor visit are key scenes really integral to the movie.
FROM's Helen's attitude earlier toward her husband we find her to be cold and very extreme on the subject of sex.
I really give this film a score of 8 out of 10 because of the cut scenes. Otherwise, I would have made it at least a 9.
My score is 8 out of 10.
