I Love This Movie!

I love this movie! Sure, it's a soap opera, but it's GOOD soap opera! I loved all the performances, including Constance Ford as Sandra Dee's witch of a mother. (The scene where she has just bought a Christmas tree and remarks, "It ought to last at least ten years; it's solid plastic", made me want to add, "Just like your heart." I've had my VHS copy for about ten years, and just got my DVD copy today. I think it's sad that Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee died rather early. It would've been great if the two of them could've done an audio commentary for the film.

I love this film, too! I'm in my mid-30s and I'm just now discovering so many wonderful films of the 50s and 60s. Thanks to blockbuster.com, I get to add a lot of these films to my "queue". I recently rented "Peyton Place" and "Return to Peyton Place". I'll admit, I just couldn't get into Peyton Place (I'll have to rent it again) - I kept falling asleep (granted, I watched the film late at night). I didn't bother with Return to Peyton Place (simply returned it to Blockbuster unwatched. When "A Summer Place" arrived the other day, I was a bit skeptical but ...

I LOVED IT!! And when Richard Egan first appeared onscreen I start screaming (like a lunatic): "Doc Chilton! Doc Chilton!" (from "Pollyanna" - one of my fave non-animated Disney films).

Admittedly, I only knew of Troy Donahue (a definite "hottie") from the song "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" from Grease: "Ask for you, Troy Donahue ... I know what you wanna do ..." I've only seen Sandra Dee in one other film -"Imitation of Life" - but I like her.

I was disappointed that the "Summer Place" DVD had no special/bonus features. I would have loved a DVD commentary, too.

"FRA-GEE-LAY. That must be Italian!"
"I think that says 'fragile', honey."

I'm not a Troy fan...but he was definitely cute in this one. :D

Sandra Dee was great in "Gidget" and "If a man answers"...I recommend them, highly.

I too love this movie, I was about 12 or 13 when i first seen it (i am now in my 30's). To me it was the ultimate love story ever. I became a big fan of Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue, though in Imitation of Life I wanted to knock him out for hitting that girl.
Loved Sandra Dee in Gidget with James Darren (another hottie from that era).

I have had my VHS copy for about 10 years, I have had all my nieces watch it and now they love it as well. I searched and searched for a DVD and couldn't find it anywhere. If you could please let me know where you got it from? I would appreciate it :)

Movie girl: I too love this film. I wish it was complete, but an important part was left out. I too viewed an old VHS tape I had made in the 80's and plan to buy the DVD.

That is funny - the tree was plastic - just like Helen's heart. In the book we find that Helen was even worse than portrayed here.

When I first saw the film in the 70's when I was still a teen, I recall a key scene that is not there on my copy. John and Molly are out all night when his boat capsizes. AWful Helen calls in a doctor to examine the terrified (and hysterical) Molly assuming she had sex with John. Her daughter was telling the truth but is shocked and humilated by her mother's actions. Ken is furious that his wife hurt their daughter that way.

I too am very sad that Troy and Sandra left our world too young. I collect all of their movies; Parrish, Rome Adventure, etc. Have you seen Portrait in Black with Sandra and Lana Turner and Anthony Quinn? A great late 50's film. Another late 50's treasure with a very young Sandra Dee.

It does make me mad when good films like these are cut in important places, but the more recent promiscuous movies with "too much sex and violence" are all over the place. To me, the issues were better handled here. For that readon I still watch many films like these - from the 50's and 60's,

Too bad Sandy and TRoy could not make a commentary for us to see in future.

I can't believe I haven't posted to this board before. Count me in....I love it too.

I watched it once again two nights ago and cried when Sylvia says to Ken, "I'm not as pretty as I was. I'm sorry for that." And Ken takes her face in his hands and says "I love you too much to speak."

I also loved when Molly says to Johnny, "I'm glad I look good to you." It is just so simple and honest. That is what you feel at that moment, so glad you are beautiful to the one you love.

Those were only two moments, but in truth I love all the moments.
