We'll Blindfold the band
What was that about why would any one do that?
So if they started fooling around the band wouldn't see it?

That is correct, I think.
"Did you make coffee...? Make it!"--Cheyenne.
Also, probably, to help let yourself go while dancing, especially if you are self conscious.
Excuse my English please, not a native speaker.
Osgood's line is, "We'll blindfold the orchestra and tango 'til dawn." I've always thought it meant that the orchestra wouldn't be able to see what time it is (when the cafe would normally close).
shareThat makes more sense. I think you are right.
shareMore to the point, I remember seeing a 1920s silent movie in which the old lecher wanted nice music for his seduction of the fair young maiden but didn't want the musicians intruding on the intimacy of the moment. He had them blindfolded. I guess that became the ideal for rich old lechers in the 20s. I've looked for the movie, and the closest I get is the Merry Widow (1925) directed by Eric von Stroheim. Need I mention that Wilder made a movie in which von Stroheim played the director of silent movies?
