Well, the '''defenseless bird'' was the one who found Aurora and made it possible for Maleficent to activate her curse, so, he had it coming.

I think getting rid of Maleficent would have brought lots of joy and happiness.

Well, the bird was evil. And Maleficent herself was later vanquished by a weapon provided, and enchanted for good measure, by the fairies. It's like how in real life killing another person is wrong unless they're trying to kill you first--doing evil to evil is good!
