Early Deaths

Seems to me that neither Signoret, Harvey or Sears lived what would be considered long lives. Odd.

Well, it struck me that I have never seen so many cigarettes (or fags, in Britlish) smoked so conspicuously in any movie. Lots of alcohol was consumed, as well.

Maybe all that smoking and drinking had something to do with it!

Well , Signoret had a big alcohol problem and sure Larry usually didn't disdain to have one drink ( and cig ) too many , either . Also the movie starred Ian Hendry in a small role and he activated his own autodestruction sequence in the same way .

A few months ago I met Derren Nesbitt ( who played the punk who beats up Joe near the end of the movie ) and got him to sign my DVD cover and we commented that he's one of the very few people involved in the movie who could have done it . I think Richard Pasco and Mary Peach are the only two other "Room" actors to be still with us . At least if we consider those who played a decently substantial role .

reply

The characters in "Room at the Top" apparently had scene "Now, Voyager" with the Bette Davis/Paul Henreid cigarette shtick.

I doubt that the alcohol was real. Acting requires a lot of retakes and they probably would have been too drunk to commit to their acting. I also doubt the cigs were real. A burning cigarette would cause continuity problems with the cig being a different length after each retake.

Blackadder, I would give anything to meet Derren Nesbitt. How nice for you.

reply

It preceded the Poltergeist curse.
