Stumpy/Burdette

Does anyone know if there were any details ever given about exchange between Burdette and Stumpy; "I see you still have a little grudge against us?" "460 acres may not seem like much to you, Nathan, but it was a lot of country to me."
There were obvioulsy many deleted scenes in this film. Wonder of there were any explaining this?

Most skeptics are terrified it's all real and are desperate to prove otherwise.

Not really. I think it just helps to explain why Stumpy would be okay with "accidentally" shooting Joe if they broke into the jail. Burdette even says "you don't like us, do you?"

Texas in the years after the Civil War had a lot of corrupt government during the reconstruction. Thats where the term carpetbagger came from, pro Union officials were sent south.... ostensibly to oversee reconstruction, but in reality they often had it out for Southern land owners and would raise taxes to where people couldn't pay and would take land from anyone who had anything to do with the Confederacy auction it off to friends of their carpetbagger regimes. Many people in Texas didn't think it was neccesary because Texas was not a battleground of the Civil War and therefore didn't need reconstruction.

I'm guessing something similar may have happened to Stumpy and Burdette got his land.

I don't "know" any more than you do, but that exchange seems pretty clear to me. Through some sort of shenanigans, Burdette was able to screw Stumpy out of Stumpy's 460 acres. But you're right, there were plenty of deleted scenes in the film. I was fully expecting to see Harry Carey after seeing him prominently in the credits, and all of his scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
