"You know, the type that likes to collect cooking recipes"

"There are some men who just are very devoted to their mothers, you know, the type that likes to collect cooking recipes, exchange bits of gossip ... "

Gotta say I was surprised a 50's movie even had such a line, even in such a subtle way. But ouch that must have been difficult for Hudson delivering that line.

Maybe he enjoyed it, the whole film has the air of being full of in-jokes.

The closet is a strange place to live, who knows if he was tormented or if he thought the whole thing was a big joke. But I've always suspected that even if his feelings were mixed, there was some deep and genuine unhappiness. The one top-flight dramatic performance I've ever seen him give was in the 1966 film "Seconds", where he plays a man who's living a glamorous but false and empty life. He doesn't even have to speak much in that film, you can see the loneliness and unhappiness in his eyes.

The inside of the closet is a land of true duality, oddly enough. I imagine part of him cringed and part of him exalted in those scenes. I mean, there must be no greater pleasure as an actor than to know you’ve fooled a hell of a lot of people.
