How did they film the phone scenes?

Personally, I believe that the phone scenes are what makes this movie great. You honestly believe that the actors are talking to each other on the other line. The split screen sequences are so perfect, that I have a hard time remembering that the characters are in two different places.

How did they film the phone scenes? Were Doris and Rock actually talking to each other? Or was some random person saying their lines off camera?

I would assume most scenes like that are filmed with a member of the crew or even the director reading the unseen person's lines. It depended on how dedicated the actors were. Charles Laughton was known to show up on any film he did to read his character's offscreen lines so the other actor would have suitable reactions. In fact, Laughton loved to read EVERYONE'S offscreen dialogue if a director would allow him.

If you enjoyed the telephone scenes in this movie you should watch the Cary Grant - Ingrid Bergman film Indiscreet (1958). I will say no more so I do not spoil it for you.

Oh, yeah- the phone scenes in Indiscreet are perfection!
