Sexy kisses

I was reading a thread about sexy kisses in another movie, and I just have to nominate the one between Rock Hudson and Doris Day in the piano bar in "Lover Come Back". It's not the kiss itself but the lead-up to it that makes it so sexy: One reason Jan (Doris Day) likes Rex (Rock Hudson) so much is because he's been a perfect gentleman, but now she's worried that this is because Rex is gay, so she's subtly been trying to find out:

Rex: I wouldn't want to do anything to spoil our friendship.

Jan (softly, trying to hide her disappointment): Is that all it is with us - friendship?

Rex (in his best Texas accent): Ma'am - that's a DIrect question. I think it deserves a DIrect answer... (and he kisses her).

The way Rock Hudson looks at her as he says that line, the way he says it, Day's reaction and the sexual tension between them just before he kisses her puts this on my list of genuinely sexy scenes from the movies.

Also, the wink and the smile that Rock Hudson gives the pianist when he realizes what her song is about is also amazingly sexy, IMO (and yes, I know he was gay in real life, but he was an ACTOR, and there was a reason why this guy was considered such a heartthrob!)

I agree completely with all your points...Doris and Rock were awesome together.
This kiss is very sexy, but the kiss they share on the beach in "Lover come back" takes the cake. Watch that scene - the part where she talks about his brother "the human satellite" is hilarious.

Why, oh why, can't they make movies like this anymore?

"he's been a perfect gentleman, but now she's worried that this is because Rex is gay"

Why would she think he's gay? Can't she just be concerned he's not interested in her "that way"?

reply

She's worried because Hudson, acting as "Brad Allen" calls her on the party line and puts the idea into her head - knowingly to set her up to come on to him on their date when she thinks he's "Rex".

It's all part of his con game to win her over without revealing who he really is.

I just watched that scene and it is hilarious the way he does that and her responsive expressions are priceless....a really wonderful scene. And that gorgeous dress and necklace! stunning (That *Roly Poly* singer was also a good addition to that scene...loved her necklace too!)

Oh yeah, I love the kisses in this movie, they give me tingles! The one in the bar was lovely, well worth waiting for (both characters & viewers, I think!). And the one in Connecticut when she's on his lap in front of the fire - "More like a forest fire, completely out of control" - ooh, how she didn't drop that wine glass is beyond me.

But the one on the beach in "Lover Come Back" is absolutely divine. They certainly don't make scenes like these anymore. So many film kisses these days are just people looking like they're eating each other up, yuck.

I'm agreeing with all of this, but I have to admit, that my favourite kiss was one of the smallest.

After the sofa kiss where Brad gets up to go get firewood, Jan leans her head back on the sofa, and Brad stands behind her and leans down to kiss her.
I adored that kiss for some reason...

reply

I completely agree! All of their kisses are great - you can just feel that chemistry between them the whole time - but that upside-down kiss when she leans her head back on the sofa is just uber-sexy. And that line before the previous kiss, "more like a forest fire," gets me every time. Mmmm. :) One of my favorite all-time movies for those scenes, and the non-stop hilarious lines/situations/innuendo throughout the movie. They really don't make 'em like this anymore!!

"He was a PERFECT gentleman."

"That's even WORSE than I thought..."

"What do you mean?"

"Well there are SOME men who...hmmm how shall I put it? Well they're very fond of their mothers...they like to share bits of gossip...collect recipies..."

"What a VICIOUS thing to say!"

Why is it in over 3 years that no one has complained that you described the kiss in Pillow Talk but say it was in Lover Come Back?

reply

...and because they *know* which movie I'm talking about? You're right, though: LCB was a typo - I guess it's just because PT and LCB go together in my mind!

reply

You're right. It's because we know you're talking about Pillow Talk. Funny, I never noticed that before. Also I agree with everything you wrote!

reply

I agree with everything the OP said except the part about the kiss being in Lover Come Back. The kiss described is in Pillow Talk. Which makes perfect sense, as this is the Pillow Talk forum.

You're right on one account; considering he was an actual homosexual is testament to his acting ability to show that his character really was in love with Doris Day.

I mean, wow. How do you not get an Oscar for that?

reply

I agree. Rock Hudson was a wonderful actor. See him in those Douglas Sirk films (Written on the Wind, All that Heaven Allows, Magnificent Obsession). He's fantastic.

And to answer an earlier question: Why don't they make movies like this any more? I think the answer is: They don't have to. We can see these great originals any time that we like.

In the old days, before VCR's, DVD's and Tivo, it made sense to make a movie in the same style with new actors, because a large part of the audience didn't know about the earlier film. But today we can turn on Turner Classic Movies or drop in a DVD and see a great film like this whenever we want. Why would anyone want to see Pillow Talk remade with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake (with Jack Black as the best friend) when it was done so much better with Doris Day and Rock Hudson (with Tony Randall as the BFF)?
