Fashion

I absolutely love Jan's clothes in this movie, I think she looks so chic. Apart from some of the hats, you could totally wear most of the outfits today. Oh to be that stylish.

Couldn't agree more. I remember first seeing Doris Day films in the early seventies and drooling at her clothes (I was in my late teens). Her clothes look just as good now. Of course, everything was probably designed uniquely for her and she had scads of fittings and the clothes were hand sown, but still, she managed to carry them off, which many actresses can't. She always looked fabulous.

Doris Day had the perfect figure for these clothes. The fashions were creates by Jean Louis, a favorite of hers from this period.

I love the clothes in this movie. Aside from the leopard muff I would wear all of those clothes now. They are just timeless, chic and classy.

Why don't we wear statement hats anymore?

Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?

reply

The leopard muff (and hat?) were way cool. Doris just rocks, she's perfect in every way. Shame she never gets the accolades of the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield - she was just as attractive and MORE talented

reply

Yeah, she didn’t have something horrible happen so she’s not cool.

Yes : ) He designed many beautiful dresses for clotheshorse Loretta Young on her TV show, and they later married.

As I'm sure you know (I'm just chiming in, here), he also did fantastic beaded "barely there" dresses for Marlene Dietrich's nightclub acts, and made Marilyn Monroe's famous "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" dress, which sold at auction for over $1,000,000 (?)

Interestingly, and unlike the Dietrich costumes, the Marilyn dress doesn't seem to photograph that well in black and white. I think it's real impact came from seeing it in color, under bright lights. I found one pic where it shows that drama:

I just watched part of this movie last night and LOVED that red dress and red necklace she was wore while singing *Roly Poly*....beautiful!

reply

The fashions of that time were great.

Late fifties, early sixties....I love that clothing!

Agreed. 70s went downhill and sophisticated fashion hasn’t come back yet.

(Also, I’m a huge fan of Queen in general and that show in particular so it’s always nice to see your little byline. In fact I just learned of the existence of a Hutton film with Cary Grant from the 60s.)

I'm so glad someone mentioned her character's fashion on this board! I've been obsessed with this style for years that it's the benchmark of my love for fashion

reply

Same here. I think I got stuck on the fashions of Doris Day when I was younger and now, decades later, I still find her looks to be sexier, classier, and more stylish than anything I see today, regardless of labels.

Granted, Doris Day has the perfect foundation for virtually any clothes, a body to die for. And then to have the clothing nipped and tucked in just the right places to enhance her natural beauty was perfect. And of course, her walk! That woman totally knows how to move her body!

((sigh)) They don't make 'em that wonderful anymore. She's top notch!

There is a great photo gallery on Doris Day's Fashion Photos webpages, unique to her. She is one of the most stylish actresses of the late 50s and early 60s.

I've always wanted this wardrobe!
