Anthony Perkins's Accent

Was there any point in the film at which he sounded remotely Australian?

reply

Australian accents are hard to imitate convincingly. A lot of actors have trouble with them.

There are a lot of films about the Pompeii disaster, but I'm pretty sure none of the actors have ever sounded remotely Pompeian.

Yes, he sounded Australian in the first few scenes, and later in the wardroom where they're discussing the war's origins over coffee, where Perkins says, "I can't believe it even naow" in a competent Oz accent. Granted it's inconsistent, but not a performance-wrecker.

I watched almost the entire movie assuming he was one of the American sailors and had married an Australian.
