A bizarre line said in this film....

The scene when Earl Slater (Robert Ryan) meets David Burke (Ed Begley) at the Hotel Juno at beginning of the film:

Earl Slater: "What you doin' with such a big ol' dog in New York?"

Dave Burke: "Never had a wife."

Now there is something that comes to my mind when Burke's character said that line, can anyone who was around in the 1950's explain, if it's not some sick joke about bestiality, what did Burke's character mean by that line?

And was that a common saying back then?

I don't know about that. No offense meant, but I believe you might be reading in to it too much.

To me it was just a tongue-in-cheek answer. He just meant the dog was for company in that he was unmarried.
