Chance mishap reminiscent of "The Killing."
The unforeseen hand of chance caused the failure of the holdup. The chances of a cop being right there to foul up the robbery were minuscule, but that's what reality's like. In Stanley Kramer's "The Killing" (shot 3 years earlier in 1956) all kinds of chance screw-ups did the same. First the shooter of the racehorse was espied and killed. Then Elisha Cook, Jr.'s girlfriend unsuccessfully hijacked the pickup by tipping her boyfriend. Finally, the suitcase containing the money falls off a luggage truck which swerves to avoid hitting a snobbish, rich woman's pet dog that got loose and spooked the driver causing the trunk to fall onto the runway and bust open scattering all the loot in every direction. I even saw an Alain Delon movie made a few years later that ended up with the same ending, only the money is scattered into a swimming pool. I don't remember the title, but it was a great ending. All great films.
