Romance?

I've never seen it and I was just curious if this movie is a romance?

reply

Not really. It's more of a piece about a woman's struggle with her faith. There are bits of it which could have turned romantic, but I don't think that's where the writer and the director wanted to take this story.

It's definitely not a romance, but Sister Luke has an interesting relationship with Dr. Fortunati, who's in charge of the hospital she is assigned to in the Belgian Congo. They behave very properly toward each other and respect each other professionally, but there's a certain amount of tension in their interactions, which adds an additional interesting aspect to the movie. He's an agnostic and constantly challenges her faith. However, Sister Luke's struggles are more with her vow of obedience than chastity.

There is some kind of platonic love and deep admiration between her and Dr. Fortunati..but it still isnt a romantic flick

Every parting from you is like a little eternity.

I don't think they were romantically attracted to one another. He saw her as a brilliant assistant, unlike most of the help he had. She behaved in ways beyond what her role was expected to be and got herself in some trouble for that. I also think she saw the doctor as a skilled professional and perhaps a father-figure. When questioned by mother superior she denied being in love with him and I believe she was being truthful there. The relationship was one of mutual respect and admiration, not physical attraction. Not every man and woman who work closely together wind up in bed together (except in Hollywood's warped image of the world).

IMO, they definitely developed a kind of love for one another, but not one out of physical attraction but one of mutual respect. (Although after watching it just now, there are a couple of scenes where he appears to struggle with an attraction to her, but still I think it stemmed more from her spirit than her face.)

I like to imagine that after she left the convent she eventually made it back to the Congo. She told the bird she would, after all. And the Dr. would have gotten a kick out of seeing that she wasn't a nun anymore, lol.
