Nuns and the Pope

I just watched this movie last night and I'm struck by just how humble the nuns were supposed to be. They were to embrace humility so much so that they lost a lot of their sense of self, and I noticed they would blush and be embarrassed to get a compliment. Now let's contrast that to the Pope. He gets to parade around while countless followers shower him with copious amounts of adulation. That is a huge double standard.

Humility is, in fact, a very significant part of the Papacy. I'm not surprised you came to this conclusion, as given its history and definition, its easy for the Vatican to be interpreted as a superficial structure of power and destruction. But at its base, it is a symbol of love, help, humility and guidance, causing in its present state no evil and no harm. All members of the clergy, the Pope included, are meant solely to help those around them with guidance and the "word of God." The fact that certain people throughout history have let the potentially powerful position of Pope lead them to self-indulgence and pride is simply a result of human nature. For every Pope who has ended up like this, though, there is another (ie. JPII)who has handled his position with grace and humility.

So, really, I totally understand your argument. But it can be potentially offensive to post stereotypes and accusations on a forum such as this. One needs to fully understand something as important as the Vatican before bashing it.

This makes me wish John Paul I was still around.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.
