The first inmates Gabrielle met at the asylum

I don't think they were insane, just mentally disabled. They were the ones in the dayroom; one of them if you remember, danced with Gabrielle.

Most insane asylums weren't filled with the insane. Most were made up of supposedly non-functioning disabled and autistic people (i.e. Rosemary Kennedy, etc.)
