Doddering Vicar

I think this role adds immeasurably to the flic;

it gives some comic relief which adds a dimension to the already moody and fine film by Hammer.

We discover he's quite the wag for spiders and is recognized as an expert in the field on a world scale.

This same actor was splendid in "Brides of Dracula" also with Cushing as a superb Van Helsing.

Incidentally we also have a splendid Watson who,too,further spices this definite Classic !

Miles Malleson was a wonderful actor, and even in small roles or fleeting bit-parts, his presence is always welcome on screen. I like him very much in Hammer's Hound of the Baskervilles.

Miles Malleson was always known for playing these type of parts and was in at least a few other Hammer movies playing a similar character.

The bishop supplies a very good passage in this film. He rambles on a bit like Nigel Bruce, as Watson, did in the earlier Sherlock Holmes. I notice that Andre Morell doesn't play Watson that way in this one. No bumbling at all on his part. So somehow I see Miles Malleson's bishop as a little bit of a throwback to the Nigel Bruce portrayals.
