I was struck by the scene where....

Lukey, the slave, was killed by southern snipers. Afterwards the Union soldiers were so sympathetic to Hannah Hunter and I thought that, if anything, they wouldn't show any kindness to a slave owner. I mean, that's what they were fighting for. On another note, I can never understand why the South fought so hard to preserve slavery when most Southern soldiers never owned slaves and maybe some even hated slavery.

They may have been showing her sympathy because she was a beautiful woman-did you think about that.

As I remember reading, there were only like 1700 plantations in the south. I think that many people were indifferent to what was going on.

reply

Don't you see? The whole purpose of Lukey's death is to assure us that Southern slave owners LOVED their darkies! They were human beings with tender feelings after all!

The Confederate soldiers who didn't own slaves were often seduced by the elite call to fight for Southern honor, freedom, hearth and home. But don't kid yourself. Plenty of them DID grumble that it was a rich man's war.

reply

I don't think ending slavery was the main reason for the war.

One thing that puzzles me about the scene is that the snipers shot Lukey from relatively close range, yet the Union soldiers never respond. They don't shoot back nor do they don't attempt to flush out the snipers. Maybe there was a scene that was cut in editing...

Some rifles used in the civil war had a range of up to 500 yards. Five football fields long, and snipers don't stick around to get shot. The question I have is; was Lukie was the intended target(not likely)or the more likely,an officer?

reply

The impression I got was that the sniper team was close and that snipers (well, good ones, anyway) hit what they're aiming at, so I thought that Lukey was the intended target.

It's been playing on cable a lot lately, so I'll have to watch it carefully.

reply

It's playing right now and I just rewatched the scene. The snipers (perhaps sharpshooters is a more appropriate term) were shown in closeup, so there's no way to judge how far away they were. However, the two shooters drew a pretty good bead on their target, so I'm fairly certain that they were aiming at Lukey. You'd think they'd be aiming at one of the officers instead...

I think they'd become so used to Hannah and Lukey being part of the group, as well as assisting them with medical help etc.
