What Althea Gibson and John Wayne had in common

Both took on demeaning and ludicrous roles for money.

The difference is that Gibson had trouble making ends meet because there was no professional tour for women at the time she became world tennis champ. In her life, racism may have held her back as well.

Whereas Wayne was an outrageous spendthrift and sucker who had no sense when it came to money management. Shamefully - considering the millions he had already earned over the course of several successful decades in film - he was broke at the time he made this movie.

Actually...You're wrong about his management of money.

It's a well established face that his then-business manager had (through questionable "investments" he suggested to JW, and by out-right THEFT), squandered all of his money.

While JW was not in the same league as Bob Hope, Randolph Scott, or Gene Autry in the area of investing and being mega rich, he proved to be quite capable after this unfortunate issue.

The well-named shoot-to-miss seems to be too busy being an iconoclast to bother about petty-fogging details like fact checking.
What Miss Gibson and Mr. Wayne actually had in common? Both were superb in this film. Thanks for putting it right, bari.

He sank a lot of money into The Alamo movie around this time because he believed in it. He also had a wife, two ex-wives and five kids.
