correct, very little of the "I" sound in shIma is heard. Also, there's little or no stress or emphasis on any particular syllables in Japanese, so
it's clearly not HE-ro-SHEma. all syllables get about the same stress.

The only time I hear the Japanese not mentioning a vowel (at least hardly, anyway) is the letter "u", as in "nomimasu" (to drink).
