Hey Texans, what does Cielo look like today?

Is anybody from that area, or been there where the movie was filmed? I would guess it's been developed by now.

it must be a suburb of Dallas. I just wonder exactly where it is

I do see where it was filmed in the winter, as the trees have no leaves, and everything looks bare

reply

Seems like I looked it up on an old map and it was somewhere in N E Texas, but it is no longer on the map.

According to the map I looked it up on, it's in far west Texas... an outskirt of El Paso.

Yeah, I saw that too, but I'm not sure that's it. That would be desert country and not like the movie.

There is no Cielo, Texas. The closest thing is Cielo Vista, which is near El Paso. Gordon McLendon from Dallas bankrolled and produced it.

As for not looking like desert... just what do you think the area around El Paso looks like? Just like this movie, that's what. In fact, it could be anywhere between Dallas and El Paso from the looks of it (and yes, I live in the area).

It was probably filmed at Cielo Ranch near what is now Shady Shores, TX. There is this excerpt from the web site for Shady Shores (http://www.spanishvisionfarm.com/horse_story_shady_shores.htm)
------
One of the most famous plots of land in Shady Shores was the 83-acre estate of Gordon McLendon, well known in Dallas and nationwide as the former owner of KLIF radio station and the co-creator of the "Top 40" format in radio. He also used the first jingles on radio and created the first all-news and easy-listening formats. He created endless publicity stunts and giveaways. He also ran a company that owned drive-in movie theaters nationwide. In the late 1950s, he produced three "B" movies: The Killer Shrews, The Giant Gila Monster and My Dog Buddy.

Some episodes of the television show Have Gun, Will Travel, which ran from 1957 to 1963, were filmed at the ranch.

Forbes magazine estimated in 1985 that Mr. McLendon had $200 million in broadcasting, real estate and precious metals.

Back in the '60s, John Wayne, Eva Gabor and Glen Campbell were regular visitors to Cielo Ranch, the name for Mr. McLendon's property.

Seeing the stars around Shady Shores became almost commonplace, said Mrs. McClain, who moved to the town in 1967.

This area is about 40 miles north northwest of Dallas.

Thank you, tawhicks. That is the definitive answer!

Thanks for the information, tawhicks. I knew about McLendon's legendary radio history, but didn't know about the ranch. I've lived in, and just outside of Denton (the nearest city to his ranch) for nearly 30 years and never knew that. Interesting.

The call letters KILT used for the radio station in the movie are for a station in Houston that was owned my Mr. McLendon, the "old Scotchman."

I am a resident of the Dallas area off and on since 1969. Cielo Ranch in now a residential development on a peninsula on Lewisville lake between Shady Shores and the town of Lake Dallas. The immediate area of Shady Shores/Lake Dallas/Corinth would have been very undeveloped and open in 1959. At the time the KATY tracks ran through Lake Dallas. Today the march of development has build an almost continuous suburbia from Dallas to Denton. Lewisville Lake is a popular local boating, swimming, and fishing destination. The train tracks likely shown in the movie for its live action train shots (using what looked like 3 different engines for the same train!) now host the Denton County Transit Authority (DCTA) commuter train known as the "A Train", from Carrollton to Denton. If you get far enough away from Dallas you will find much the same countryside as in the film, complete with the white gravel roads on black gumbo dirt.
