Literature...

Was the movie based on a book, or the book based on the movie? I've had a copy of the book for years, but it's still a recent printing...I didn't even know the movie existed, until I saw it in DVD format during a trip to a local DVD store. I'd like to see the movie, but was curious about how the book/movie mesh. Thanks.

The movie is based upon H.T. Kavanaugh's Darby O'Gill and the Good People. It's recently been reissued by One Faithful Harp Press and you can get it on Amazon. The Darby in the story is much younger than the one in the film. King Brian is considerably more active with the human community (at one point having a long theological discussion with the village priest while fairy blacksmiths replace the man's horse's thrown shoe) and the stories are well written and vary quite a lot. I like it very much and highly recommend it to anyone who wants more Darby O'Gill--or more King Brian.
