Just got the DVD and reviewed it. It is in wonderful shape with an excelent print and flawless audio. I'm very pleased to say that as far as I can tell, there are NO alterations to the film (unlike other recent Disney re-releases) and I've seen this movie enough times that I think I'd have recognised a change. (I can't tell you how many times I've watched this movie... I can't count that high!)
As for extra content, there are three.
The first is a short entitled "Mr. Connery Goes to Hollywood" all about Sean Connery and his carear up to Darby O'Gill.
The second is a short entitled "Little People, Big Effects". It is a mini documentary on how they made the effect shots look so good in 1959 without the aid of modern special effects methods. WARNING! I want to take a moment to let everyone know that you might not want to watch this short. While it doesn't contain anything objectionable, it does ruin the "magic" of the movie. I'm no dummy and I've seen this movie hundreds of times, but after watching the short I noticed mistakes and flubs in the effects that I never would have noticed if I hadn't seen how the scenes were done. Just a word of caution.
The third bonus feature is the original Disneyland TV show, "I Captured the King of the Leprechauns" in its entirety. I am SO glad this was included and unedited.
Note: This movie was NOT filmed in widescreen, but using the older circular lens 35mm cameras. It is NOT in pan-and-scan, but it is fullscreen as originaly filmed and presented in the theaters. There is no widescreen version because there never was one. (I'm a stickler for this and only ever buy widescreen if the movie was made that way)
The only thing about the DVD I didn't like was the cheesy DVD Menu they used. It looks like a cheaply done Web page. Other than that, I have no complaints. In short, as a rabid Disney fan, one who knows enough about Disney trivia and minutia to bore most people to tears, I am proud to say the latest release of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" is 100% worth getting. You won't be disapointed!
