You know, you shouldn't generalize. I am sure some Irish people are that dense, and some are not. Give the political correctness a rest. Who cares either way?
Accept who you are: a cool, drunken, dumb, thick bastard. But it doesn't matter cause you're cool, drunk, and chicks dig your accent. Don't deny who you are man! That's why I salute you with a guinness.
NFlaum, I take it you're an American who knows very little of the ways of the Irish... It's taboo to drink too much beer in Ireland and the only reason people think this is because the Pub is a meeting place for the people in Ireland.

I am Irish and what I have experienced in my thirty years of life is that many irish are fun loving people. They do not take life so seriously like some other nationalities. I know this sounds like I am stereotyping but some stereotypes have a bit of truth to them. The irish are more likely to laugh at themselves and at things that go awry. "they make lemonade out of lemons that are thrown at them" :) anyway, We all should take some life lessons from the irish. Sit down, have a pint and when things go wrong have two pints :) May the luck of the irish be with you all :)
Hey, we're talking about a "children's movie" that's almost 50 years old. Public perceptions change over the course of two generations. Yes, the film is full of stereotypes and could even be considered insulting by today's standards. However, the charm of the film is timeless, the use of the material is far more respectful than any before or since, the performances are spot-on and the story's delightful.
In other words, it's a great movie with flaws. Kinda like people--Irish or not.
And anyway, who in the movie is dumb? Certainly not Darby, occasionally greedy and a little foolish but not dumb by even the furthest stretch of the imagination. Katie? Michael? Even Pony--nasty, brutal, selfish and cruel--is no fool.
Didn't see any incidents of the Irish being protrayed as stupid.
It was a delightful little film and still holds up today. Sure the picture is a little grainy and Sean has a few more grey hairs now, but it's a film I hold dear to my heart.
i believe the films so good as there were no such things as stereotyping, political correctness, etc. couldn't be made 2day as it would be dubbed racist...
