Those who had the VHS copy...(Possible Spoilers)

Before the DVD version came out me and a friend would watch this movie a lot and we noticed little goofs. One major one was when Darby and King Brian were drinking in the barn and doing the wishing song. There is a part where King Brian's fly is down...actually for quite a while. We used to joke and say that of course he had to go pee since that cup he drank out of was huge.

Well I bought the DVD version and they touched up his fly! Now I'm wondering if we were the only ones that noticed this. Has anyone else noticed this? Sorry if this has already been discussed.

There are many wee goofs in this here gem of a movie. The biggest goof was that at some time over the last few years, Disney re-dubbed the movie to make it easier to understand. Darby and Mrs Sugrue sound different. Also in the DVD that I bought about three years ago the parts with Irish language in them have been taken out and the english translation put in. For instance when Darby counts in to "The Fox Chase" on the fiddle,in the original version that I saw on TV as a kid the line in "a hAon, Do, Tri, Ceathar" which is 1 to 4 in Irish, the new DVD line is "One, two, three, four". Also King Brian tells Padraig Oige to "Fetch the Stradivarius" instead of "Faige an Stradivarius". I have seen this movie countless times. Its just magical.

I have seen it a ton of times...but I didnt notice the change of the language...I actually remember the Stradivarius line b/c I remember being confused! But in the version i have he does say one two three...So you remember that the fly thing? I love love love this movie

I gotta have a look again to see the "fly" thing.

I have the DVD and the VHS versions and they're identical. King Brian still commands Padraig Og in Gaelic, Darby counts off the beat to the "Fox Chase" in Gaelic, King Brian commands the little people to the hunt in Gaelic, and King Brian and Darby toast each other in Gaelic. From inside Darby's game bag King Brian swears most vociforously in Gaelic. And King Brian's breeches remain decently closed. In fact, I don't think there's a fly there at all. All that's visible is a seam, exactly as in every other scene in the movie. I've seen this move many, many times over the last 40 years and I've gotten pretty good at spotting tiny details. I think the combination of the unclear VHS picture, the fact that the King's breeches aren't tailored very well sporting a noticable pucker and some of the film's use of shadow may have given the impression that King Brian is less than fastidious in his habits.

i wonder, did they touch up, when darby started playin the stratovarias, the music started a second or two before he even touched the strings

You know I would almost bet on that...and I still firmly believe the fly thing that...because my friend's copy of that me her and her brother all saw it. It was soo funny, that something like that would slip.

King Brian's breeches don't have a fly. It's just a seam. It does pucker where a fly should be, but I even magnified the screen to see what you're all talking about and all you can see are tiny stitches. In fact, it makes me wonder how Jimmy O'Dea went to the bathroom.

The difference for me between the VHS and DVD copies are the sound.Darby and Sheelah just sound different than the DVD copy. I don`t like the overdub, prefer the old version better. But still, this is one of my most favorite films of all time.

reply

The version on here IS the orignal audio. The Overdub in not used on this DVD at all. The review on ultimatedisney.com confirms this. That's why they all have thick Irish accents.

Leonard Maltin started all this nonsense in his book about Disney films from about 40 years ago when he claimed that Albert Sharpe was dubbed. At the time I was able to check a 1959 and a 1969 release print and they had identical audio.

I have no good reason and suspect that monkeys possess some sort of soul. Geode

OMG, I thought I was the only nut job who noticed the fly :)
I still own only the VHS copy, but I like it more like that, it's quite nostalgic watching it like that...

Too weird to live, to rare to die!

reply

I understand your feelings, but the advantage to the DVD is that it has the extras including an interview with Sean Connory, a bit about how the film was made and the DisneyLand tv episode that touted the movie so delightfully. You don't get those with the VHS version.

And King Brian's fly is NOT down. You can see quite plainly on the DVD that his breeches are decently closed but badly tailored with noticable puckering in unfortunate places.

reply

I could have sworn zip was down :)
So, the DVD is worth buying?
Is it easy to find and how much have you payed for it?

reply

I don't remember how much I paid, but it was quite reasonable. You can probably go even cheaper if you get a used one on eBay. As to easy to find, yes. Just Google it.

Also, I thought the picture quality was much, much better.

P.S. Why are we all discussing whether or not King Brian's fly was open or not? Just curious.
