What would happen in a re-make?

I just watched this movie a few nights ago and I am still stunned at the total awesomeness at the visual effects quality (I also have the DVD and they showed how they made the movie and I am even more stunned). But it got me thinking. If they ever did a re-make for the film, how would they do the visual effects? They'd probably would use computer animation which I think would take away from the film. So here is my question to you all. If Darby O'Gill was going to become a re-make (which probably won't happen 'cause the original is THAT good but let's use our imaginations here) do you think if they used the original techniques ,in a world where computer animation has totally dominated the visual effects industry, from the original movie, the film would still look awesome?

MY OPINION: ABSOLUTELY!!!!! I think it actually would be a re-fresh to see something look that good (and real) without computer animation.

Unfortunately, the way things are going in the movie industry right now, we just might see a remake . Let's hope not.

In any case

I agree, it would be refreshing to see an effects movie done without being completely saturated by special effect, and put forward that it might even look better because of the quality and advancements made in the movie industry even without computer effects. I do love seeing good computer animation but often computer animation can be too slick and there is something about other effects that can seem more... real. I wouldn't mind seeing a little digital editing and perhaps some subtle computer effects but not totally dominated by it, working with the story

Of course they wouldn’t have Albert Sharpe or Jimmy O'Dea which would detract from it. I can just imagine them approaching Connery for the remake. It would be interesting, as sort of a tribute to the original though he always projects too much dignity to really pull of the scruffy rogue Darby's supposed to be.

Not to mention the fact that he would sound exactly like he did in the original, ie Scottish!

I did mean to meantion that in my other post. Yes, I love him as an actor but he's never been very good at altering his accent

Thats why highlander is so brilliant. Connerys meant to be spanish and lamberts meant to be scottish!!

In the words of Ramirez himself "I'm not Spanish I'm Egyptian" But I know what you mean

I first thought your question was going in a different direction - so the first things that came to mind were:

---------

In the 2005 remake, Katie O'Gill would be playing "hard to get" because she's actually a lesbian.

The Little People would actually be an "oppressed people" seeking independence and respect (and reparations), and the "Queen" would be played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Darby O'Gill would be in danger of losing his job not because of his drinking and absent-mindedness, but because his evil, blonde-haired, blue-eyed yuppie landlord was getting ready to outsource.

It wouldn't be a musical, because Hollywood doesn't produce those now (unless they're animated) but would feature a really lame theme song by Elton John or Phil Collins.

And, there would be at least one scene where Pony's mother (the old lady Sheelah) enters a rap contest, and kicks someone in the groin.

---------

Sarcasm aside (if possible) this film is rather indicative of attitudes of the time (of filmmakers) and would/will be ruined as a modern remake. I don't think they could pull it off in 2005. Some classics should be left as such. IMHO.

Seriously, no offense to anyone (except the PC crowd who *believe* it should be re-invented as I detailed above), I love this movie, it was a great part of my childhood.

Cheers!

i totally agree with u!!!!!!! it never could be as good as it already is.

If they did a re-make, here is exactly what would happen: It would be loaded with cgi. Some pop star du jour would record a song written for it, which would be hyped to death, along with a lot of worthless merchandise. Finally, it would have a lot of crappy actors/actresses hired solely for their names with no regard for their (lack of) suitability for the part.

In other words, it would suck!!!!

you so totally could not make a good remake of this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean no one could ever beat sean connery in that movie!!!!!!!!!!! so what if he is a scot doing an irish part!!!!!!!!! he is like the best part of that movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

I'm a lifetime Connory fan, but the best part of Darby O'Gill is King Brian.

Perhaps Connery could play Darby O'Gill?

If they casted Robin Williams as Darby O'Gill, I'd be all for this. He'd be brilliant.

If they did a remake, all the characters would be black, including the leprechauns, and Eddie Murphy would play Darby.

reply

The only way this movie could be remade successfully would be if Pixar or one of the other 3D animation companies did it. There are no living actors who could replace the originals.

reply

It would actually be pretty cool to see this animated.
Any remakes would be unnecessary, the original had an unique charm with amazing casting.

I have this horrible dream that Darby O'Gill would be remade with a multicultural cast rapping to Snoop Dogg.

Please don't give me unnecessary nightmares :)

A Miyazaki 'take' (not remake) on this would be interesting I think.

I don't know but I hope it is not done by Disney, Disney remakes of classic films tend to suck badly, example, the parent trap, Herbi the car, freaky friday, I'd rather Disney not remake this.

Still I wonder what the Banshee would look and sound like with out modern tech.

reply

Red, did you mean 'with' or 'without' modern technology? Without modern technology, it would probably look much as it already does. Filmed against a blue or green screen (a technique Disney pioneered in 'The Absent-Minded Professor', except that he used red), and then polarize the film to get the negative effect. With modern technology, we'd probably get a clearer look at her, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as eerie as the low-tech result.

Remakes these suck. Would change the story, Darbie will now be black just for the hell of it and played by Eddie Murphy.

reply

Not just your post, but why are so many posters implying that black casting would be worse than what would actually happen: everyone played by 'Hollywood' actors - glossy hair, perfect teeth, regular features, plastic-surgeried and botoxed to Barbie-doll rigidity. It's the 'real' faces that make this film. (Oh, I know that Sean Connery is handsome, and the girl is pretty, but they're a seoondary story to Darby's duel with King Brian.) I know he's gone now, but Redd Foxx would have had the right 'look' for Darby, although not the typical 'Irish' colouring.
