Who is the Banshee?!?!
I'd really like to find out who the woman was who played the Banshee.
How could we find out?!

Sorry for the really late reply. Ah well...
As for who played the banshee, that will probably remain a mystery. I'm surprised that no one knows to this day. :/
Don't know who it was but she/he/it sure scared the pants off of me when I saw this movie in a theater when I was 8 years old. I loved scary movies and didn't frighten easily, but the Banshee gave me nightmares. I've warned friends with young children about that scene and 2 couples I can think of decided not to show their kids the film after being frightened by it themselves. Of course, the effect was much greater on a big screen. But just last night I watched it again on TCM on a rather small screen. And it still gave me a shiver!
shareI totally watched this on TCM last night, too. Haven't thought about this movie in a good 20 years, and was blown away by how well it held up.
And yes, that Banshee is STILL SCARY!
As does Darby's delivery of the line "It's the Ban-SHEEe!"
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
I could not have imagined watching this scene is a Disney film as a 10 year old and sleeping anytime soon after that!
sharethe Banshee could have been animated.
shareThe banshee was definitely not animated; the detail is too precise. If you look closely, she is combing her hair, as the banshee is said to do when she comes for someone who is dying. Also, in the close-up when Darby opens the door and sees her, the face is all too real to be animation.
To get the effect, they filmed the actress alone, probably against a red screen such as they used for the flying sequences in 'The Absent-Minded Professor' (Disney was a pioneer in that field), then polarized the film in post-production to give the banshee that other-worldly look. It's rather like looking at a black-and-white photographic negative.
Who played the Death Coach driver??
"Darby O'Gill.....Get in."
Been googling that very thing myself. That scene with the banshee's face always gave me the shivers. it took me about 30 years to get over. I'd like to see the face of the actual actress. It doesn't look very promising.
shareYep, this indeed had some spine-chilling scenes, although Disney always did have a knack for having scenes that would give the young viewers a bit of a fright.

For tricky Disney trivia, I used to write to David Smith at the Disney Archive. He or his staff had more knowledge and access to information that you could find in any other source. If the banshee information is still available, they would have it.

Do you still have his contact info? Perhaps you can PM me? I'd love to write to them -- I have so many questions! I just never thought people actually received replies.
