Martha Hyer - role drastically cut down?

I'm surprised Martha Hyer, who is billed higher than Diane Baker, is barely in the film. I think she even has less screen time than Joan Crawford. What's the story there? She had just been nominated for an Oscar, so I'm floored Fox wasted her here. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this?

If I recall the remarks made on the commentary track correctly, more footage was shot with Hyer than what appears in the film. But to simplify and streamline the story, those in charge decided to focus primarily on three of the young women---Caroline, Gregg, and April---and almost all of Hyer's scenes were cut.

She isn't the only one to suffer this fate---apparently Joan Crawford had a big scene that was cut also. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, none of this footage still exists.
