Middle-aged Cornelia and her assistant(lesbian companion?) were irritating with their naive "we'll be safe by locking the bedroom door and firearm on the lampstand" routine. The Bat would/should have had them for a midnight snack.
Actually enjoyed this movie including the above-mentioned foolhardy behavior.

Well Cornelia Van Gorder makes a living as a murder mystery author, it stands to reason she doesn't work with J. Edgar Hoover to get her material. And Lizzie is her maid, has been for 20 years, about half of her life, how much life experience does a maid have in murder?
Really, you should check into the material that made the first Bat movie, in the original novel, yes Cornelia Van Gorder is a woman who has led a VERY sheltered life and she resented it. 65 years old and not one adventure to her name. That's why she got her gun in the first place, to learn to shoot incase any prowlers came around the home she rented for the summer because she would not be scared out of it.
And as for fight or flight, that detective guarding the house in the end was trained to fight, and you saw what good it did him. How do you fight somebody you don't know when or where they come from? You don't know when they're coming, you don't know how they're getting in but somehow you plan to be right there ready to kick their ass, how?
You ought to make the effort to see the original of this which is much better. It is entitled "The Bat Whispers" with Chester Morris made in 1930. It was also the single biggest influence on Bob Kane for Batman. Hokey, but beautiful imagery.

Actually, Yodzingie, The Bat Whispers is not the original. The Bat, also made by Roland West in 1926 was the original, The Bat Whispers was a remake...and by the way, all you with Turner Classic Movies, keep a lookout because June 23rd at 1:30 in the morning, The Bat Whispers is going to be on!
