Was the word 'panties' considered risque in 1959?

How many times can they use the word "panties"? It's like a kid who has just learned his first naughty word, and he proceeds to use the word as often as he can.

Judge: "Get off the panties!" LOL!

In real life: not at all.

In movies: yes.

Laughable that a sex bomb temptress like her wore those granny panties. I would have thought a lacy thong.

She said her husband didn't get home until six. Fugger comes rollin' in at five.

'Panties' would be more risqué in the 1920s. Before then, women's underwear was long. In the 20s you started seeing the very short underwear that seems so ordinary today. They were called panties, scanties, knickers (more like boxer shorts, often with a pocket).

In the '50s that would all be routine. What was NOT routine was the fact that the woman in this story is not wearing a GIRDLE. Girdles were as required as brassieres in those days and it was unthinkable not to wear one. It was like hijab, only socially required, not religiously. If you didn't wear a girdle and bra, or a corset (combines both), you were a slxt and "inviting it."

This is also why women tortured their hair into those artificial styles you saw back then. Leaving your hair natural was a sure sign you were "loose". When girls and women dispensed with all those things in the 60s and 70s, many people saw it as a sign of moral decline.

You've got me?! Who's got you?!
