Glory Road with Eddie Albert - SPOILERS

OK, so what was the deal with Eddie Albert's character, Roany Bishop, in this episode?

So much was left unsaid about the backstory on this episode, and after watching I had some questions. It almost appeared that Bishop had some kind of brain injury or whatever. His personality varied wildly, from almost childlike at one moment to violently deranged in the next.

I kept waiting for a line of dialogue from Jess that would perhaps shed some light on the situation - like Bishop had suffered a head injury or whatever - but it never came as far as I could see.

Plus, Jess doesn't seem to be the kind of man to run away from a debt. So I wondered why he was trying to hide from Bishop...as if Bishop never released Jess from his debt and forever after demanded that Jess do his bidding.

Any thoughts?

My take on it was he was paranoid - schizophrenic. Very ahead of it's time, I think.

Yeah...it was a character that was *very* off kilter, and was somewhat different than the typical character seen in westerns of that era.

It's standard to show bloodthirsty, murderous, larcenous, treacherous characters that would shoot their own mother in the back for $1.

But this guy was one of the more unusual characters...extremely manic. And I didn't really get the idea he was in control...at least not all the time. It was like he'd get angry and would go completely insane.

Yes, an interesting and complex mentally ill character, well portrayed by Albert.
