Slim's shoulder stitching

When I see the black-and-white episodes of Laramie (Season One, I assume) I notice that Slim (John Smith) almost always wears a shirt with unusual stitching at the shoulders. It's like he was working his delts so much that they popped through his shirt and he needed to sew up the holes. I guess he wasn't making that much off his stage station to buy a new shirt.

What is the deal with that stitching? I have never seen another shirt like that one before and would like to understand the significance in the stitching.

Maybe it was a gang insignia and Slim wasn't quite the pure good guy he pretended to be.

Or it could have been like notches on a bedpost. After Spring Byington joined the cast he acquired so many new stitches he had no more room on the shoulders and had to switch to different shirts.

It looks like the shoulders are sewn on with black shoe laces. Lucas McCain had much cooler shirts.
