Black gloves?

Does anyone have a theory about all the shiny, black leather gloves worn in so many of these westerns? In particular Robert Fuller on Laramie. But there are many others on other westerns. Joe Cartwright, Peter Breck as Nick Barkley on The Big Valley just to name a few. It's like they wore them in situations that didn't call for gloves. Was it just the cool factor?

May have been something to do with holding horse reins and ropes, I dont know, I'm not a horseman

Robert Fuller didn't even take his gloves off for a gunfight or fast draw and he never lost.A gunfighter with gloves takes a lot of realism away from me.I believe that a lot of these directors were from the East and didn't know any better. And the actors probably didn't know any better either.

They may have gotten it from SHANE, in which super-gunman Wilson puts a black glove on his gunhand before going into action. I don't know what the rationale was for this, but apparently someone thought it would enhance Wilson's draw.

It just looks cool.
