Why does Brando hold a handkerchief to his nose?

When he visits the Captain who had his face blown off.

I have not seen the film yet, but in the book Hardenburg is located next to a soldier with severe burns all over his body. Diestl notes that the poor soldier's skin had started to scab and fester, causing terrible odor in the room. Hardenburg, having no nose, could not smell it himself.

Makes sense. I didn't read the book.

I suspected perhaps the man was already dead and started to smell and Hardenburg couldn't smell it. But then again I thought the hospital wouldn't keep a rotting corpse around like that.

Thanks.
