Gestapo in police station in France scene

What exactly happened when Brando's character opened a door when he heard a scream? The Captain acts like opening the door is a criminal offense and says he would have shot Brando had this happened on the battlefield. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Hard to imagine your confusion ... somethings where not meant to be see by everyone.

Still, he was an officer in the German army. How was it a shooting offense? Perhaps I am unaware of the protocol that was in place in that time and place of warfare.

The Gestapo were the secret state police of the Nazi party and I don't think a lowly captain in the German army wanted to make enemies of em.

Christain bustin in on the torture session and protestin the prisoner's treatment would've surly got him and possibly the captain in trouble since Christian was under his command.

Good explanation
