When's this masterpiece out on DVD?

You'd think Criterion would have snapped up the rights to this great movie. Definitely worthy of a good DVD treatment.

I hope soon. I need this movie. One of my favorites. Sinatra and Martin rule in this one.

I have seen on the list of DVD Direct that it is
scheduled for release on October, 25th., 2005. Yet
on Amazon pre-orders it is totally absent!!!?? I
wonder which is the true version!! I hope that the
October 25th. date is correct!! Is it too much to
ask the "Genius Lords" of MGM to release such gems
as "HOME FROM THE HILL" & "RAINTREE COUNTY" as well??

reply

Raintree County is nothing more than A Gone With the Wind wannabe.....and I thought Gone With the Wind was a piece of melodramatic trash.

You'd think I would like Raintree because Monty Clift, Liz Taylor and Eva Marie Saint are some of my favorite actors...but the movie was not a satisfying experience for me.

I'm sure you know the Monty Clift story regarding this film....if not, please reply to this and I'll explain.

reply

You my friend are correct about Gone with the wind

Home from the hill... Now THAT is one I have not seen for about 25 years. I love robert mitchum in that. That was another of Minelli's right?

I heard that Minelli liked to set the stage and then set the actors loose on it, pretty hands off director.

Except for that quip about the carnival scne at the end of ome came running... He wanted to MOVE the whole ferris wheel back by two feet. Haha! Nah, it would not do to just move the camera a few feet, would it?

Don't know about DVD, but it was on TCM tonight 1/14/06 (I recorded it on DVD) and will be repeated tomorrow afternoon/evening. Check the TCM schedule. Hope this is helpful.

I just saw this movie- and while many things kept bothering me (the Dean Martin character- what a chauvanist!), the ending made me sooo depressed and weepy. I loved the "intellectualism" vs. "non-intellectualism" theme that was developed so slowy-- how, in the end, the MacLaine character loved him, purely, with her whole life, without trying to analylize and understand him (the Sinatra character).

WB doesn't liscense their material out so Criterion won't ever be getting any WB titles. In the last Home Theater Chat, it was announced that Some Came Running would be part of a Frank Sinatra Collection, but no date was given for release.

reply

That's good to know. I mentioned elsewhere that there are more than a couple of (unreleased) Warners owned Sinatra pictures that would be terrific in a DVD set, say, a signature collection i.e. Some Came Running, None But the Brave and The Naked Runner.

reply

Well I'm sure it will be a Signature Collection. I'm hoping for Step Lively, It Happened in Brooklyn, and The Tender Trap.

reply

I was just about to check if It Happened in Brooklyn was out on DVD, or not, as the case me be. Not a bad picture, and it would be more than welcome in my collection if it is part of a future collection.

And let's not forget Meet Danny Wilson, although, I believe that Universal owns the rights to that film.

Found this on the Sinatra Family site...

People who have been hoping for a release of this film, perhaps along with a Frank SInatra box set of his films would do good to read through this article from the Digital Bits.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...ll032006b.html

There is a chart halfway through this article listing dozens of much vaunted over DVD releases that haven't been undertaken as of now. It says:

"Sinatra, Frank - Box set, but timing undecided. Likely will include Some Came Running"

It goes futher on to say that "Some Came Running" has also been restored. Some good news, folks.

Let's hope it's soon, very soon. This film was partially fimed in my hometown of Madison, Indiana, so naturally I can't wait. I do have it on VHS, but now want the DVD version.

reply

I was hoping for this to be mentioned during Warner Bros. recent on-line discussion at The Home Theatre Forum, but there was no mention of any new Sinatra releases. Pity, because I'm sure Sinatra's films sell well on DVD -- at least the top titles.
