Dumb As A Stump
I thought Gomer Pyle was stupid, Andy Griffith made him seem like a rocket scientist. I think a tree stump is smarter then Andy in this movie. Maybe the stupidest person ever portrayed in a film?

shareWell maybe a current stupid stump would be Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.
shareIt's a movie. In your ignorance you have given Andy Griffith the ultimate compliment. He sure was dumb in this movie as Will Stockdale..."STOCKDALE"!!!,,He was SUPPOSED to be dumb. That's called GRRRRREAT acting. Andy Griffith is a great actor that hollywood will not see again.

When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
Andy Griffith did a fantastic job playing a country boy in this film. It was hilarious and great to watch!

Maybe he wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, but the idea wasn't that Stockdale was 'stupid' as much as he was 'countrified' and innocent. He thought 'differently', i.e. he DID put the rings together but not in the expected way.
shareYes, there's a difference between stupidity and ignorance. He wasn't stupid, he was ignorant.

Did you ever see Andy Griffith in "A Face in the Crowd"?
My respect for Andy Griffith skyrocketed after seeing that movie.
"Save me Jebus!", Homer Simpson
Human37,
This movie is my all time favorite performance for Andy Griffith, but "A Face in the Crowd" is second.
He was brilliant in that one also. When I saw "A Face in the Crowd", I thought the same as you. Lonesome Rhoades was something else!
I also thought that the Will Stockdale character was a precursor for Gomer Pyle. The premise of the story is quite similar.
You are right and that is the reason that NTFS was a great comedy movie.
