It's on this week- tape it now!

Thursday, August 17th, BBC2, 12:35pm.

Set VCRs to stun. It's one of the Beeb's once-a-year regulars but is so worthy of many more than once-a-year viewings. To that list of once-a-years, you can add 'The League of Gentlemen' and 'School for Scoundrels'. Oh, and if anyone can tell me the last time they saw 'Double Bunk', I'd be amazed.

I think it's a real gem and Stanley Baker is usually a good watch. I also watched it and thought I'd taped it but later found out my tape ran out halfway through. Curses! I know it'll be on again over the next year or two as usual, but it's one of the films I like to watch when I'm in the mood. Script-writing in those days was often much more subtle than today and it's a good example of it.

I'd shell out for a DVD copy, if only I wasn't a yeller-belly about my finances...

Actually, as a fan of Mr Baker, I assume you've probably seen Hell Is A City. That's another really good, we'll-show-it-once-in-a-blue-moon film.

An early attempt to show cops as fallible humans, it caused a bit of uproar in its day and it's a great watch now. And, by George, it's actually a Hammer film.

Also, one of my favourites as there are some great British actors in their 'youth'.
Although most of the truck speed scenes are somewhat cringeworthy, with speeded-up film, my favourit road scene is - wait for it - where Stanley Baker dismounts from a London Trolleybus and then you hear it depart with its characteristic electric whine...
