Why does Tom kiss the spark plug he finds on the ground (before he enters the office to apply for the driver job)? For good luck? How is kissing a spark plug good luck? Is this something British that an American like myself loses in the translation?

I think he was just so desperate to get work, when he saw it on the floor, he treated it as a good omen (that needed a little coaxing)!
