1.66:1 ratio BluRay

Finally, on BluRay, they presented DRACULA in the proper ratio of 1.66:1!

After the 4:3 VHS, I was so happy to have DRACULA on dvd, but with 1.85:1 it was frustrating that they cut part of the heads and lose some air around them, as well as a bit of art decoration. Widescreen wasn't always 1.85:1 back then, some movies just aren't suited to mask them too much.

And now, on BluRay, we can also enjoy complete picture, better quality, as well as some awsome formerly missing seconds here and there. Yay!

Not only that but the picture quality is terrible, all around. A strange dark blue tint on every scene.

Here, you can see the comparison.

Well, I've seen this Dracula film in a theatrical release in 1979, and I remember the blue-ish quality of the picture. So that was a 35mm screening.

Two years later I saw it again, on tv, and it still was blue-ish. I like the dvd release somewhat, but I supposed they livelied it up a little as they often did with dvd's.

I just projected the BluRay on my nine feet screen, and it is really wonderful. Not as dark as your link says it.
My bet is that, looking at the image now, the blue tint was there in the Original negative and theatrical positives. At least it was there when I saw it at the cinema.

Question: does the DVD disc included with the Blu-Ray also include the extras and the Japanese footage, or are those parts of the Blu-Ray disc only?

reply

The DVDs (there are 2 in the set) have the same 2 versions of the film and the extras as the Blu-Ray as far as I can tell.
I have the set but don't have a Blu-Ray player so I have only watched the DVDs but the extras listed on the case are all there.
The one DVD has the 2 versions of the film and the commentaries and the second disc has the rest of the extras.
