Drove from London to Castle Dracula in one night?

Impressive.

I'll admit that until I got to this site, I thought that the castle was in Transylvania, not Germany but it is still a neat trick what with the English Channel and all.

I think they were all in mainland Europe, never in England. It was confusing.

I like that Stripes ripped off the border guard bit.

Well, it was, technically, in Austria-Hungary. Hammer usually just stuck with German names, with the notable exceptions of Father Sandor in Dracula, Prince of Darkness and Doctor Ravna in Kiss of the Vampire. Maybe the mix of German, Hungarian, Romanian, Romany, Slovak etc. that you would have found in the real Transylvania would have been too much.

In this film they never mention Transylvania and London but the story entirely seems to take place in some area of central Europe.

Quite correct. The story is mainly set around Dracula's castle and the town of Klausenburg. Hammer excised all references to Dracula's London schemes due to bugetary concerns. They simply didn't have the money to bring this off.

Yet, it has characters like Harker, Holmwood, Mina and Lucy who clearly have English names.

In the sequel, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, the four tourists are specifically mentioned as being from London, England, and are travelling in the Carpathian Mountains. However, they clearly have no trouble communicating with any of the locals -who spoke with the exact same dialect and accents they did.

Even in the 1931 Universal film, Renfield required the Innkeeper to translate for him in talking to the coach driver.
