My husband and I just watched this on Netflix and I just loved it! I already have castthe leads for the 2012 remake. PLEASE don't hate. This list is by appearance, attitude and actors I like only. Matthew Maconahay as Brick (He look just like Paul!), Scarlett Johansson as Maggie, John Goodman as Big Daddy, Meryl Streep as Big Mamma, Vince Vaughn as Gooper and Missi Pyle (Look her up) as Mae Sister-Woman. Please don't hate just say who you would like to see do the remake.
i disagree but i respect your opinion to speculate. Its an excellent film with a top shelf cast back in the 50's. There is nobody alive that would be able to fill the shoes of Burl Ives, Liz Taylor, and most of all Paul Newman. This film is a figment of the times. Southern plantation with stars and bars waving children, subtle and ambiguous homosexual undertones with Brick (too smart for today's writers), backtalking women with real animosity, Tennessee williams was a gigantic figure then and it impacted the film greatly, and most of all the family in crisis-a crucial topic then that isnt reproduced as strongly today. But if i did pick a cast I would choose:
Brick- Daniel Day Lewis or Christian Bale (method) Big Daddy- Jeff Bridges Maggie- Anne Hathaway or Scar Jo Big Mamma- Judi Dench Gooper- Tim Robbins Sister Woman- Frances McDormand
Don't hate me but I think Brangelina would make a great Maggie and Brick. They were so steamy together in Mr and Mrs Smith. Scarlett Johansson is too Madonna like and soft-edged for me. I can see Philip Seymour Hoffman as Gooper and Frances McDormand as Mae. Maybe Robert Duvall as Big Daddy and Ellen Burstyn as Big Mama.
she has the seductive, dark, and slightly exotic beauty perfect for "the Cat". She has the talent, too, and is not just a pretty face like 'Scar-Jo'. Plus she's proven she is excellent with Southern accents.
Yes, he would be superb. He's the only contemporary actor I can think of who can even BEGIN to come close to Burl Ives' larger-than-life characterization of the Southern patriarch. He's also a terrific dramatic actor.
Agree with all except Ashley Judd... perhaps if she didn't do all that with her face it could have worked. Also, I wouldn't mind a new star. I am tired of the same old people in every film.
Well, I thought of Judd because her beauty seems SO perfect for the role of 'Maggie'...kind of Liz Taylor-reminiscent. Plus, she turns in solid performances.
I so wish this movie would be made with my dream cast, LOL!

Brick - Ryan Gosling Maggie - Jessica Chastain Big Daddy - Jack Nicholson, Albert Finney, or maybe Tom Wilkinson Big Mama - Sally Field or Dianne Wiest
Just have Tyler Perry play the entire cast since he seems to have no reservations of playing dress up and little to no shame about the excrement he dumps on the viewing public.
