Nicky

Can anybody tell me if Nicky (Jack Lemmon's character) is supposed to be gay in this movie? Kim Novak say's he uses his powers for his love life, and he summoned Retlich (Ernie Kovak) to them, and ended up collaberating with him.

reply

NO!

That's the one thing that makes me sick of the time we live in--"Is he gay? Is she gay?"

He summons Retlich to get fame and money for himself.

End of story. That's all.

reply

YES!

It's implied that he's gay. The author John Van Druten, actually constructed the whole play as a coded story on gay life. Nicky is implied to be gay. Though it's Gillian who summons Retlich, not Nicky.

I didn't know it was deliberately supposed to be about gays. This explains why lots of gay people like Bewitched too, in addition to the fact that it's simply about people who are different and have to stay for the most part in the closet. Can you tell me where you read about Van Druten's authorship of the original play?

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

Has nothing to do with the time we live in. Has to do with the time when the film was made - when you couldn't come out and openly identify a character as gay so you had to suggest it.

I don't find Lemmon's character obviously gay, but there is definitely an effminate air in his performance.

We never see him with a girlfriend, and he seems absolutely disgusted by the thought of male-female romance (judging from his raction of his sister's affair).

And of course his closest relationship is with another man, the Kovaks character.

I don't find any of this definitive proof, but it's easy enough to read the character that way.

I've never seen the play, but in the movie it's Gil that summons Redlitch by using the silver potion that Nicky gave her for Christmas. She spread it on his bookjacket picture and burned it.

The collaboration with Redlitch was in retaliation for Gil telling Nicky NOT to associate with the writer because she didn't want accurate information in the new book.

Jack Lemmon was awesome as Nicky!

he didn't summon retlich....kim novak did. it was her idea.

If Nicky was, indeed, "repulsed" about Gil and Shep's romance I think it was because Shep was a mere "mortal".

I tend to agree - Nicky did seem like a gay character to me (as a gay man myself). Of course, they had to be careful how they portrayed gays back then. Was there any doubt the 'Uncle Arthur' character on 'Bewitched' was gay?

I agree. And the fact that Gillian was prepared to give up being a witch in order to live a normal life, being in love with Shep. Don't forget that Nicky was also upset that she put a spell on all publishing firms to not allow him permission to print his book on witchcraft.

It was Gillian who summoned Redlitch. Nicky just said he would take the credit for it.

I think it has to do with the weird facial expression and dozens of silent quirks the Nicky was giving, to me they are clearly what 1950s Jack Lemmon saw as how a gay person acted. My gaydar was going off every time he was onscreen.

It was the idea of love in general Nicky had a problem with not that it was male/female.

I didn't see his sexuality as a pivitol aspect to his character but is he gay or not? I think it's left up to the audience to decide for themselves.
