Can someone tell me the meaning of this line?

At one point, in his office, Jimmy Stewart asks KIm Novak something to the effect - "you're american, right?" to which she replies "yes...in fact very EARLY american".

Was she implying that she'd been alive at the time of the pilgrims, or the witch trials?

I think Jimmy Stewart asked her if she had been "engaging in any 'un-American' activities?" She replied, "Very American--in fact, early American activities." I interpreted that as meaning that she is currently engaging in activities that date back to the time before the American Revolution. The first Salem witch trials took place in the late 1690's.

Oh, right. Where's my history? (lol)

So then, I guess she was saying that she's immortal, or atleast has been alive a long time.

Thanks! :)

All she is saying is that the "activities" she has been engaging in are very definitely American and have been around since there's been an America.

It was patently obvious that she was referring to Salem and whether she was there or not, her ancestors definitely were. She and her brother had to come from somewhere, and remember that while love is a definite no-no, "hot blood"
is most certainly allowed!
