I have a love-hate attitude towards remakes. I love them, because it's fun to see what different vision someone can lend to an old idea re-vamped. But, I hate them, because it could cause people to lose interest in the original, except as a side-note. I also hate them (the post-1970s ones, anyway), because I know that one of the first elements to be sacrificed will be the sophistication. The fact is that with very few exceptions, the last truly sophisticated, classy era of movies was the 1960s. And, depending on the story and people involved, the 1970s.
But, by the 1980s, it was all about the punks, the special affects, and the cynicism---which has only been on the increase, ever since, effectively spelling out the sharp decline of the character-pictures of the past. And, that's what I hate about remakes the most of all!
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
