I think Shep was hooked from the get-go. (Possible Spoiler)

He asks to use her phone because he's running late for an appointment, and we assume he's going to call the person he's supposed to be meeting up with, but he never calls that person (Merle) and merely calls the operator to report his phone being broken...and that's because Gil put a spell on him, before she put a spell on him.

Like he said at the end of the film: maybe it wasn't a spell, maybe it was just love right from the beginning.
